4.8 (640)Single-vintage Chardonnay from the top of the slope, five years on the lees. Our most precise wine, and the one to lay down.
Few bottles left of this vintage
Taut and very fine; lemon and white peach, then almond and toast from the long rest, with a long mineral finish.
Oysters, crab, a hard ewe's-milk cheese.
2019 was the warm, dry year English growers had been waiting for, and our top rows of Chardonnay, planted in 2004 on the thinnest soil on the estate, ripened slowly and evenly into October. We picked them separately, pressed only the first and gentlest juice, and made this wine from nothing else.
After five years on the lees it has the depth of an older wine but none of the heaviness. The acidity that chalk gives English Chardonnay is still there, holding everything in line.
We made 3,200 bottles and hold a few hundred back for the library. When this vintage sells out, the next Blanc de Blancs will be the 2022, released in 2027.
“Lunch at a long table between the rows, a glass of each wine with each course. The Bacchus with the crab tart is the best thing I ate all summer.”
