About this wine

The 1979 block is the reason Marledon exists. Eleven rows at the very top of the slope, planted by the family that still runs the estate, on soil so thin that the roots are in solid chalk within half a metre.

Those old vines give very little fruit, a third of what a young vine would, but what they give is concentrated and complex. In 2020 we made a single barrel-aged wine from them and nothing else, and held it in bottle for two years before release.

Club members get first allocation of every Old Vine release. Anything they leave goes on sale here, usually for a few weeks.

“Walking the 1979 block with the person who prunes it every winter is a different thing from reading a label. We joined the club in the car park.”
